Male mating tactics

Article Abstract:

The mating behavior of male alpine accentors, Prunella collaris, was investigated based on timing and frequency and correlated with dominance, age and sexual maturity. Results revealed three mating tactics based on hierarchy. Alpha males, the most dominant, guarded several females in succession during their fertile periods. On the other hand, gamma males, the least dominant, rarely mated and only with unguarded females. Beta males have flexible mating tactics.

Multiple mating between black bears revealed by DNA fingerprinting

Article Abstract:

The mating system of the Ursus americanus population in the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve in Ontario, Canada, was studied using DNA fingerprinting. The results showed both single and multiple paternity within litters, with one male having fathered two litters of cubs. Despite the small sample size and high background of band-sharing, it can be concluded that both male and female U. americanus practiced multiple mating.

Mating between two hybridizing species, Viviparus ater and V. contectus (Mollusca: Prosobranchia)

Article Abstract:

A study has been conducted to examine mating behavior in two species of the aquatic snails, Viviparus ater and Viviparus contectus, using assortative mating techniques. Heretospecific mating had higher mating propensities than random mating when it was under low density, but nearly equal when under high density. This suggests that mating occurs in conjunction with the fitness of the hybrids in populations.
