Rapid sustainability modeling for raptors by radiotagging and DNA-fingerprinting

Article Abstract:

A demographic construct based on the age-specific survival and breeding data was set for a harvested Kazakh saker falcon (Falco cherrug) population by radiotagging youths and assessing adult turnover with DNA-fingerprinting. It was found that similar demographic models can be set up quickly if the nestlings are fitted with consistent and safe radiotags and adult turnover can be evaluated from genetic analysis and other methods.

Impacts of El Nino-Southern Oscillation events on the distribution of wintering raptors

Article Abstract:

The effects of El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events on the distribution and abundance of raptor species at continental, regional and landscape scales are examined. The results have underscored the need for long-term monitoring at both local and regional spatial scales in order to detect changes in continental populations.

Estimation of black bear abundance using a discrete DNA sampling device

Article Abstract:

A device is designed that has provided a unique hair sample at each trap site and has produced reliable estimates of bear abundance. The hair samples are used for identifying individual bears through DNA analysis and bear abundance and density are estimated via mark-recapture analysis.
