Mass emigration of arctic tundra caribou from a traditional winter range: population dynamics and physical condition

Article Abstract:

Winter range fidelity among Arctic tundra caribou may arise because areas with rugged terrain offer predictable access to winter forage, with caribou developing traditional movements to such habitats gaining a selective advantage. Research undertaken among a caribou subpopulation on Foxe Peninsula, southern Baffin Island, Canada, investigated a number of aspects of caribou biology due to changes in winter range on Arctic tundra. In the future, intensive harvesting of Arctic tundra caribou may cut growth of certain subpopulations. It could also restrict forage depletion on winter ranges during the increase phase of long-term cycles.

Spatial organization of a prairie striped skunk population during the waterfowl nesting season

Article Abstract:

An understanding of the effect of predation on waterfowl nests is needed to effectively manage declining duck populations in the Canadian prairies. A study in southcentral Saskatchewan looks at the spatial organization of populations of striped skunks, an important predator of waterfowl, during the nesting season. The study shows that female skunks are more intensive predators of waterfowl nests and that the position of their natal dens has a strong influence on skunk movements.
