Mating success of male birds

Article Abstract:

The mating success skew index decreases with the mating arena (lek) size among males of the ruff Philomachus pugnax, a kind of bird. Widemo and Owens's conclusion based on null hypothesis of random mating does not hold, as Mackenzie and others prove that lek size and mean mating success affect the skew index. The findings help in understanding the evolution of lekking as a mating system and and its role sexual selection. Testing of Mackenzie and others' hypothesis is described.

Tug-of-war over reproduction in a social bee

Article Abstract:

The predictions of productive skew models in the Australian allodapine bee Exoneura nigrescens are presented by manipulating the parameters. The determination of how ecological, social and genetic factors jointly influence group stability and partitioning of reproduction between group members is required to understand social evolution.
