Measuring the pulse of a plume with the sedimentary record

Article Abstract:

The uplift of large parts of the continents are driven by plumes of hot materials originating from deep in the Earth's mantle. Such uplift is accompanied by erosion that can result in large amounts of sediment being deposited into surrounding ocean basins. Research shows that individual sediment pulses in the North Sea basin are correlated with the timing of surface uplift in northwestern Europe, itself related to activity of the Iceland plume. Such a use of the sedimentary record could be used to determine fluctuations in plume activity predicted theoretically.

Rheology of the continental lithosphere inferred from sedimentary basins

Article Abstract:

The steady-state flow properties of the continental lithosphere are essential factors in various geological processes. Analysis of variations in strain rate during the extension of continental lithosphere inferred from sedimentary basins indicates that cooling and concomitant strengthening of the underlying lithospheric mantle governs cessation of extension. Moreover, power-law creep with a stress exponent of three and an activation energy of 500 kJ mol-1 controls the rheology of the lithosphere.

Understanding the thermal evolution of deep-water continental margins

Article Abstract:

Onshore regions of the middle-east and offshore continental shelves have been explored for new hydro-carbons. This seeks to change the hydro-carbon industry for economic and political reasons.
