Mechanoelectrical transduction of adult outer hair cells studied in a gerbil hemicochlea

Article Abstract:

An attempt is made to record outer hair cell (OHC) transducer currents and basilar membrane motion in an excised and bisected cochlea, the hemicochlea. The results reveal that asymmetrical transducer currents and receptor potentials are significantly larger such that they possess highly restricted dynamic range and strongly depend on cochlear location.

Prestin is the motor protein of cochlear outer hairs

Article Abstract:

The inner ear's sensitivity relies on the amplification of vibration by molecular motors in the outer hair cells of the organ of Corti. New research has isolated the cDNA clones that encode the outer hair motor protein, prestin.

Fringe benefits to carbohydrates

Article Abstract:

Studies of molecular mechanisms are discussed with reference to their biochemical features. Carbohydrate chains produced from Fringe proteins which join to a cell receptor and then modulate it are described.
