Medical network pioneers live 3-D surgical images

Article Abstract:

Nagoya University of Japan initiated the first live test transmission of high-definition medical images to the Duke University Medical Center in Durnham, NC. The novel technology was the product of the Global Interoperability for Broadband Networks project which involved the formation of a three-dimensional television system for the Nagoya-Duke network. However, Tokyo's National Cancer Centre had already developed a more advanced national network that links Tokyo institute with other hospitals and cancer centres via a six-megabit-per-second optical-fibre link.

Molecular biologists in Asia and Pacific plan research network

Article Abstract:

Life scientists from the Asia-Pacific region have met to discuss the creation of the International Molecular Biology Network (IMBN), a research network. It is hoped that the IMBN would revive interest in molecular biology and increase cooperation between institutions through postdoctoral fellowship schemes, workshops, practical courses and conferences. There were differing views on the form the network should take, sources of funding and individual membership.
