Article Abstract:

It has been established that bismuth titanate incorporating lanthanum could be a good material for a memory capable of retaining information when the power is removed from the device, thus making battery back-up unnecessary. This research involved modifying bismuth titanate by the solid-solution addition of lanthanum oxide to create Bi3.25La0.75Ti3O12 (BLT) films. It seems likely that BLT will prove to have the required properties and ease of processing that will make it the preferred choice over the PbZrO3-PbTiO3 solid solution and a related material based on SrBi2Ta2O9.

Lanthanum-substituted bismuth titanate for use in non-volatile memories

Article Abstract:

It has been established that lanthium-substituted bismuth titanate thin films offer a promising alternative for ferroelectric random access memory applications to lead zirconate titanate and strontium bismuth tantalate films. The bulk polarization value of these films is the largest among those of lanthium-substituted bismuth materials. Furthermore, these films have a Curie point, which marks the transition between ferroelectric phase and paraelectric phase, of around 400 degrees C.
