Missing lithotroph identified as new planctomycete

Article Abstract:

The process of anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) is an innovative technological advance in the removal of ammonia nitrogen from waste water. Bacteria able to anaerobically oxidize ammonia were previously known as lithotrophs missing from nature, but this missing lithotroph has been identified as a new, autotrophic member of the Planctomycetales order, a major distinct division of the Bacteria.

Hyperion the sponge

Article Abstract:

The observation of Hyperion's surface from Cassini indicate that the Saturn's moon Hyperion is dominated by water ice, low reflectivity, concentrated at the craters' bases prominent with absorption bands due to presence of solid carbon dioxide in complex with a further unknown material.

The urban organism

Article Abstract:

The scalings of different indicators of cities' activity and infrastructure scale and their relation with their size are examined. The economic indicators of activity vary with population, whereas the larger biological organisms have greater economies of scale and slower-paced lives.
