Model marsh in Louisiana

Article Abstract:

The Baton Rouge, LA, zoo has incorporated a two-acre artificial marsh into its exhibits which doubles as part of a wastewater treatment system. Wastewater from the zoo is filtered of solids then flows over a bed of rock and aquatic plants where bacteria decompose organic matter. The water is finally run over ultraviolet lights which kill bacteria. The water may be recycled into the marsh or released into the bayou. The marsh has attracted numerous indigenous species including many wading birds. The marsh will pay for itself in sewer-use fees within three years.
