Nest-vicinity song exchanges may coordinate biparental care of northern cardinals

Article Abstract:

The vocal interactions of northern cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis) in the vicinity of their nests were examined to test the hypothesis that female vocalizations from the nest inform the male of the need for food. The results support this hypothesis. It was found that male cardinals were more likely to return to the nest when their mates sang, unless the female matched her song to that of the male.
