NASA to teach 'epidemiology by satellite.'

Article Abstract:

NASA is promoting the use of satellite data for predicting and preventing infectious diseases that are transmitted through animals, insects and other vectors influenced by landscape. The approach was introduced to health ministers and medical directors from 20 countries in Nov 1995 at a Baltimore, MD conference and a workshop series is planned to targed specific diseases. Examples of applications include detecting mosquito infestations from rice field characteristics and malaria risks for villages near transitional swamps and cow or horse pastures.

US cardiologist found guilty of theft

Article Abstract:

A world-famous cardiologist, Bernardo Nadal-Ginard, has proven to be guilty of stealing more than $117,000 from a hospital and several organizations. The court ordered him an one-year jail sentence, a supplementary imprisonment in state for three-and-a-half to five-and-a-half years after a five-year suspension and community service of 40 hours a week between the two sentences. Nadal-Ginard's faults were excused by his defense lawyers as a psychiatric condition of bipolar 2 mood disorder, but the excuses were not accepted.

Researchers bring fishermen on board

Article Abstract:

Commercial fishermen who were affected by the collapse of local fish stocks as a result of overfishing were willing to collaborate with the scientists in the collection of data that provide the basis for fishery management strategies and regulations. This collaboration will improve relations between the two groups and will enhance understanding on both sides. Scientists will learn from fishermen and fishermen, in turn, will become knowledgeable about scientific methods.
