NF-kappaB activation by tumour necrosis factor requires the Akt serine-threonine kinase

Article Abstract:

Activation of the nuclear transcription factor NF-kappaB requires a signalling pathway leading to phosphorylation of IKK-alpha by Akt (protein kinase B). This research indicates that Akt serine-threonine kinase is involved in the activation of NF-kappaB by tumour necrosis factor. It has been possible to identify a mechanism through which Akt could suppress apoptosis. It is suggested that Akt could play a role in cytokine-mediated immunity.

Calcium promotes cell survival through CaM-K kinase activation of the protein-kinase-B pathway

Article Abstract:

Ca(super2)+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase kinase (CaM-KK) is shown to activate protein kinase B (PKB) directly, leading to phosphorylation of BAD. A three to fourfold rise in cell death of NG108 neuroblastoma cells was induced by serum withdrawal, and the apoptosis was mostly blocked by raising the intracellular Ca(super2+) concentrations with NMDA. This suggests a Ca(super2)+-triggered signalling cascade.
