NIDCD research on taste and smell

Article Abstract:

The researchers at the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCO) are using basic and applied approaches in the laboratory and clinic to investigate taste and smell and their relation with nutrition and global health. It is found that taste and smell problems are associated with high-priority health risks and a decline in the sense of smell often serves as an indicator of future cognitive problems, such Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.

Aluminum - Alzheimer's link?

Article Abstract:

J.P. Landsberg's hypothesis on aluminum and Alzheimer's disease erronously discredits all other studies that have practically established a relationship between the two. Using what they claimed to be a highly sensitive equipment, Landsberg and his co-researchers failed to detect aluminum in the neuritic plaque of their brain samples. From this they concluded that past evidence using different detecting techniques may have resulted from contamination.

A specific amyloid-beta protein assembly in the brain impairs memory

Article Abstract:

Tg2576 mice, which express a human amyloid-beta precursor protein (APP) variant linked to Alzheimer's disease were used to investigate the cause of memory decline in the absence of neurodegeneration or amyloid-beta protein amyloidosis. Results reveal that memory deficits in middle-aged Tg2586 mice are caused by the extracellular accumulation of 56-kDa soluble amyloid-beta assembly, which is termed as Abeta*56.
