NIH faces plans to privatize clinical centre

Article Abstract:

The US health department's plan to privatize all or part of National Institutes of Health (NIH) has caused widespread alarm on NIH campuses such as Bethesda, Maryland. The privatization plan, which involves transferring responsibilities from the center to private contractors, is the brainchild of Philip Lee, assistant secretary of health. Helen Smits, the deputy administrator of the Health Care Financing Administration, has been asked by Donna Shalala, the health and human services secretary, to assess options for privatization. Smith does not favor total privatization.
