Synchrotron bids seek ways to raise money

Article Abstract:

British research councils support the upgrading of the 2-GeV Synchrotron Radiation Source at Daresbury, Cheshire, using two insertion devices at a cost of 9 million pounds sterling. However, funding the 100 million pounds to build its proposed 3-GeV successor, known as Diamond, will be difficult. Laboratory officials suggest that the money may be borrowed from the industry or the government and later be paid off. France, Switzerland, and the UK are making collaborative efforts to build third generation SRSs.

UK council seeks 60 million pounds 'pulse' to ease LHC burden

Article Abstract:

Britain's Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC) requires extra funds toward its contribution to the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, Switzerland. The funds amount to nearly 10 million pounds a year for a period of six years. PPARC is facing financial difficulties owing to the government's reduced science budget and a relative increase in the size of its contribution to the European Laboratory for Particle Physics.

Cuts force UK astronomers to drop key role in gamma-ray satellite

Article Abstract:

Budget cuts force UK astronomers to relegate their role in the construction and usage of the $396-million gamma-ray satellite, Integral, to be launched by the European Space Agency (ESA). Budget cuts are associated with the Office of Science and Technology's efforts to restrict the space science budget of ESA and to deny funds for the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council for domestic scientific projects during 1995-96.
