Naked cuticle encodes an inducible antagonist of Wnt signalling

Article Abstract:

It has been established that naked cuticle (nkd), a Drosophila segment-polarity gene, antagonizes Wg/Wnt signalling. Wg and other Wnts are autoregulatory in many contexts, and Nkd could therefore influence the quality or distribution of Wg by controlling Wg synthesis or transport or by reducing the positive feedback of Wg activity on its own synthesis. Nkd could connect ion fluxes to the regulation of the potency, duration or distribution of Wnt signals. Vertebrate Nkd-like proteins could be vital for restraining Wnt activity during development and possibly cancer progression.

Edward B. Lewis (1918-2004)

Article Abstract:

Edward Lewis is remembered as a brilliant, eccentric and kindly scientist. His papers questioned contemporary complacency about the safety of atomic bomb testing and had considerable political and scientific impact.

Effects of oncogenic mutations in smoothened and patched can be reversed by cyclopamine

Article Abstract:

The plant-derived teratogen cyclopamine restricts the Hedgehog response and is potentially a therapeutical agent for treatment of basal cell tumors.
