Natural-cavity use by nesting wood duck in Illinois

Article Abstract:

Availability of suitable nesting sites can limit wood duck populations although little research has been undertaken on the use of natural tree cavities by nesting wood ducks. A new study in westcentral Illinois investigates the abundance of natural tree cavities and their use by nesting wood ducks. The study shows that silver maple, black willow and American sycamore provide the most suitable nesting cavities for wood duck.

A survey for mallard pairs in the Atlantic Flyway

Article Abstract:

A study estimating the number of mallard pairs in the Atlantic Flyway from Virginia to New Hampshire is presented. A total of 1,5000 plots were visited annually and randomly between 1989 and 1992. Adjusted results show that there were 300,849 mallard pairs in the region during the four-year period. The ground plot survey will need to be continued in the upper Atlantic Flyway to monitor waterfowl breeding in the region.
