Navy protects island monarch

Article Abstract:

The island of Tinian is in the Marianas Islands Archipelago and forms part of the Northern Mariana Islands. Around 66% of the island is leased to the US Navy for military training exercises. The area supports several endangered wildlife species, including the Tinian monarch, a native flycatcher. Research undertaken by the Navy and the Fish and Wildlife Service has concluded that the preservation of the island's remaining limestone forest habitat is benefitting the flycatcher, as well as other fauna and flora.

A closer look at recovery

Article Abstract:

Two bird species have recovered from threatened extinction while one eventually became extinct. The Everglade snail kite, 'Rostrhamus sociabilis plumbeus,' has reestablished its dominance in Lake Okeechobee after a series of recovery plans, while population of the Mississppi sandhill crane, 'Grus canadensis pulla,' continue to grow. However, captive breeding methods failed to preserve the Dusky seaside sparrow, 'Ammodramus maritimus nigrescens.
