Neither straight nor narrow

Article Abstract:

Cells mostly respond to signals from their neighbours and families of cell-cell signals include the Wingless signal-transduction pathway, the genes for which were first identified in Drosophila melanogaster. The seemingly simple pathway has a key regulated component in Armadillo, which is usually unstable inside cells. Additional regulatory inputs have since been discovered at each level in the pathway, and Tsuda and colleagues suggest that Wingless is in fact a protein complex, with Frizzled receptors using Dally, a heparin-sulphate-modified proteoglycan, as a co-receptor.

Three-dimensional structure of the Stat3Beta homodimer bound to DNA

Article Abstract:

Signal transducers and activators of transcription (STAT) proteins respond to extracellular signals including cytokines, growth and hormonal factors. They dimerize on activation by cell-surface receptors and translocate to the nuclear to bind to specific promoter sequences of the target genes. The first crystal structure of a STAT protein bound to a DNA recognition site at 2.25 A resolution, is reported. This gives an indication of the various steps taken by STAT proteins to deliver response signals directly to target genes.
