Noise-supported travelling waves in sub-excitable media

Article Abstract:

Stochastic resonance has been found in chemical, physical, magnetoelastic, laser and electronic systems, and there is a possibility that signal transmission may be aided by noise in biological media such as neuronal tissue. Wave propagation has been found to be positively influenced by noise in an experiment using a photosensitive Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction. A rise in noise amplitude enhances wave propagation, with an optimal level for sustained propagation, above which it is only possible to observe fragmented waves.

More red tape than ever for Russians travelling abroad

Article Abstract:

Russian Scientists' foreign travel is impeded by bureaucracy in the foreign consulates, especially European and Asian, as they have imposed rigid rules for processing travel documents. The director of the Travel-Grant Program of the International Science Foundation claimed that though a hundred scientists had managed to cross the Russian borders to attend various conferences, many scientists could not reach their destinations in time because of the delay in formalities relating to travel arrangements.
