New era of fiscal restraint for Australia

Article Abstract:

The Liberal-National Coalition government in Australia has proposed a severe cut in the funding of scientific research in a move that neither emphasizes entrepreneurial culture nor supports technological innovation. The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, the Australian Research Council, and the National Health and Medical Research Council are not affected. The reduction of tax concessions for industrial science and technology has been criticized for discouraging innovation. The 5% cut in university funding will force them to forge alliances with the industry.

All change for university funding?

Article Abstract:

The report of the National Commission for Higher Education recommends changes in the financing of tertiary education which, if implemented, will have far-reaching effects. The commission suggests that the state should finance teaching and research separately to improve the accounting of their results. It emphasizes that research funding should not be utilized for other purposes. The universities are apprehensive that a cut in the funding will jeopardize the upgradation of the equipments and renewal of library subscriptions of journals.

Universities' own feet

Article Abstract:

Publicly supported universities everywhere face funding crises. The London School of Economics hopes to alleviate its crisis by seeking contributions from future students. The US and Britain propose to make loans to some students; Australia has an additional tax for graduates. Perhaps a common, more equitable scheme for educating as many as possible will emerge. The risk is that governments will push schools to assume such quasi-independence too soon, harming everyone.
