Non-centrosymmetric superlattices in block copolymer blends

Article Abstract:

Macroscopic electric polarization materials have useful properties, such as piezo and pyroelectricity. Centrosymmetric molecules cannot generate a macroscopic polarization. A non-centrosymmetric structure was formed in an amorphous material via spontaneous self-assembly. Block copolymers form ordered structures, and it is shown that a combination of a ternary triblock copolymer and a binary diblock copolymer will arrange itself into a non-centrosymmetric layered structure.

Quantum confinement and light emission in SiO2/Si superlattices

Article Abstract:

The quantum confinement guides the silicon (Si) band structure in SiO2/Si superlattices and causes light emission in these superlattices. Fabrication of the Si/SiO2 superlattices involves the use of molecular-beam epitaxy. The superlattices emit visible light by photoluminescence. An argon laser beam is used to analyze the characteristics of room-temperature photoluminescence of these superlattices.

Confinement-induced miscibility in polymer blends

Article Abstract:

Copolymer compatibilizers can induce miscibility in polymers. Rather than manipulating the chemical composition of the polymer blend, complete mixing was obtained by the physical effect of confinement in thin films. This is due to entropic inhibition of phase separation into micelles, resulting in an immediately mixed microemulsion with a flat surface and two-dimensional maze like structure.
