Not everything is in the genes

Article Abstract:

Genetic research can contribute towards a greater understanding of social behaviour, but the impact of socialization and the nurturing environment should remain the dominant considerations. Behavioural characteristics are usually derived from a complex mix of environmental influences and genetic determinants, although an understanding of genetic influences could help people to better handle problematic social situations. Responses to social situations can be determined by a sex-dependent genetic influence and the different social skills of men and women is due to genetics, according to research by David Skuse.

What price ergonomics?: Ergonomists have a say in the design of almost everything in the modern world, but there is little evidence that their methods actually work

Article Abstract:

Ergonomists are involved in certain aspects of the design and evaluation of a range of products, and ergonomics traditionally has most influence on a design's physical characteristics. However ergonomists can also advise on interactive devices, but there is a lack of substantive evidence that ergonomic methods actually work. 10 popular ergonomic methods were tested for reliability and validity, and showed huge variability. If ergonomists are to improve design, their methods must be shown to be useful and usable.

The value of everything

Article Abstract:

Economists and ecologists are developing methods for computing the value provided by the Earth's ecosystem. C.W. Clark's mathematical model states that profits can be maximized by correlating hunting with the breeding capabilities of various whale species. Others equate the value of whales with the amount money that will be willingly paid for the protection of these animals. Other ecologists and economists that have dealt with the issue include Constanza, Palumbi and Baker.
