Nuclear stockpile controls under fire in US

Article Abstract:

The Nuclear Safety Smokescreen report of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IEER) states that the US Dept of Energy's (DOE) Science-based Stockpile Stewardship programme will not achieve safety and reliability of nuclear weapons stockpiles. IEER claims that reliability and safety are separate issues and the Stockpile programme does not focus on safety issues. According to DOE, the programme will determine changes in the reliability and safety of nuclear weapons with age. Despite discontentment in the scientific community, the US Congress supports the program.

Teraflop computer hits a Republican nerve

Article Abstract:

The building of the world's biggest supercomputer by Intel will be funded partly by the Department of Energy causing opposition from some Republican leaders. According to these Republicans, such contracts are a type of corporate welfare and should be abolished. Steven Shiff, Republican from New Mexico, has supported the contract. The disagreement between the Republicans has helped the supporters of the contract. The teraflop computer will be used for computer simulations for nuclear weapon designing and other energy department research.

Neutron source plans face uncertain future

Article Abstract:

The US Dept of Energy is considering making a less ambitious spallation source through upgrading existing reactor-based neutron sources at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Brookhaven National Laboratory. The future needs of US researchers for access to neutron sources had to be reassessed following the cancellation of the proposed $3-billion Advanced Neutron Source (ANS) because of tight budgets. There are plans to build the ANS at a later time when the money crunch is less severe.
