Oil spill threatens Japanese nuclear plants
Article Abstract:
Japanese nuclear plants along the Japan Sea coastline are being threatened into closure by an oil spill as large oil slicks approach the seawater intakes of these plants. The spill was caused by the splitting into two of the Russian oil tanker Nakhodka, resulting in the leakage of millions of liters of thick fuel oil from the tanker. Although Russia has sent an oil-cleaning ship for clean-up operation, the Japanese central and local governments are slow to respond to such disasters. Clean-up operations at sea have also been hindered by rough conditions. If oil were to enter a plant's intakes, the water-cooling systems for the turbines will be damaged.

Election tonic for Japanese science funding
Article Abstract:
Japan's government research sector expects more funding from the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) which is expected to return to power. However, radical changes in the administration of science are unlikely. Allotting extra money to science and technology is supported at a cross-party level. The island of Okinawa aims to provide new facilities for tropical research. However, LDP needs support from its coalition partners before it can do something positive for science and technology.

Soccer boom may score for Japanese science
Article Abstract:
The Japanese government uses money earned from gambling on sports to finance science and technology. The public does not support this policy as they fear that their children will be led astray and the opposition party, the Social Democratic Party, has expressed its displeasure. The academicians feel that universities will accept funds regardless of their source. The New Sports Party has given a new perspective to the issue saying that betting will be educational for children.
