Olfactory traces and spatial learning in rats

Article Abstract:

Experiments conducted in white light and in darkness were used to evaluate the utilization of olfactory traces by rats, Rattus norvegicus, in spatial orientation in an open environment. Results reveal that olfactory traces are used by rats in localization as evidenced by accurate spatial orientation with or without visual cues. Olfactory traces appear to complement other orientation mechanisms in the rat. Although rats can rely on olfactory cues in spatial orientation, the establishment of such traces in the absence of other orientation mechanism is questionable.

Long-term memory for a spatial task in young chicks

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the long-term retention of a one-trial detour learning task in young chicks indicates that two-day-old chicks have the ability to solve a one-trial spatial task in which they must make a detour around a U-shaped barrier. It is also clear that young chicks can maintain a long-term memory for a task of this kind. Some form of representation of the goal object and its spatial location seems to be needed to explain the chicks' performance.

Field experiments on duration and precision of grey and red squirrel spatial memory

Article Abstract:

Field experiments were conducted on the precision and duration of spatial memory in red and grey squirrels. Results reveal that grey squirrels have excellent spatial memory under naturalistic conditions. Recall, although in lesser levels, was demonstrated by grey squirrels even in protracted retention intervals of 43 and 62 days. Red squirrels exhibited shorter duration spatial memory as compared to grey squirrels.
