On the node of a wave

Article Abstract:

A technique to inject electrons into a plasma wave created in the wake of a propagating laser pulse has resulted in compact electron accelerator of astonishing stability which could one day find applications in fields from radiation therapy to radiography and femtosecond chemistry. The laser wakefield accelerator works by first using a single intense laser pulse to ionize a passive gas such as helium forming a plasma of charged electrons and ions and creates a wake as it displaces plasma electrons from its path.

Cool vibes

Article Abstract:

Some of the most valuable probes developed to determine how properties such as temperature and density change inside a plasma, are based on collective motions of the charged particles that are sensitive to conditions in plasma. It is found that in plasma with densities that vary over a length scale greater than that of the electron oscillations, the structure of these electrons collective modes becomes richer.

Time for Japan to shine?

Article Abstract:

Plasma physicists have sought a larger medicine that would hold burning plasma for a sustained period and subsequently International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). Successful experiments were conducted in Japan and the progress of existing small fusion experiments was steadily impressive.
