Article Abstract:

Key linguistic information is erased as native languages disappear faster than scientists can document them. The US National Science Foundation and National Endowment for the Humanities established the $4.4-million Documenting Endangered Language project since it is believed that small and endangered languages display rare characteristics that help linguists understand the limits and versatility of language and might also contain knowledge about nature and offer insights into human migration.

The database revolution

Article Abstract:

The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) and its equivalent agencies around the world are looking for ways to assist the growth of validated and accessible databases. This which would involve development of policies for evaluating proposals on databases and associated analytic tool, their sustained funding, and ensuring accessibility of data deposited for long time even after the project originators have moved on.

Article Abstract:

The 2005 budget, as announced last week by U.S. President George W. Bush allows no growth after inflation is taken into account, for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or the National Science Foundation (NSF). The budget also showed few signs of effective interagency cooperation.
