One-stop shop for microarray data: is a universal, public DNA-microarray database a realistic goal?

Article Abstract:

A rough draft of the entire human genome should be available by spring 2000, but scientists are still a long way from a clear understanding of gene function. Obtaining information about gene expression is a much greater challenge than DNA sequencing, as gene expression is a dynamic process influenced by many factors. DNA microarray and 'chip' technologies make it possible to investigate gene expression in an organism on a genomic scale, permitting the transcription levels of many genes to be measured at the same time. It is now time to form a public repository for microarray data, with standardized annotation. However, this is a difficult task, and will present bioinformatics with a significant challenge.

Molecular switches in metastasis

Article Abstract:

Research on the genes which can cause metastasis, the spread of cancerous cells, is discussed. Scientists used gene-expression profiling to identify which genes are responsible for the molecular changes leading to metastasis.

Single-molecule analysis of DNA uncoiling by a type II topoisomerase

Article Abstract:

It is possible to observe the action of a single topo II as it uncoils a DNA molecule directly and in real time. It is clear that single molecule experiments are a strong new tool for the study of topoisomerases.
