Patterns of Genetic Diversity and Its Loss in Mammalian Populations

Article Abstract:

Microsatellite data from 108 mammalian species are examined for the impact of demographic threats on genetic diversity levels. Data on heterozygosity, body mass, and taxonomic groupings are provided. A loss of genetic diversity was observed in both rare and common species, indicating that conservation policies targeted above population levels may be insufficient to protect diversity.

Importance of Assessing Population Genetic Structure before Eradication of Invasive Species: Examples from Insular Norway Rat Populations

Article Abstract:

A method for assessing the genetics of separate and proximate animal populations is presented, using Norway rat populations on 18 islands off France's Brittany coast as an illustration. It demonstrates how separate individuals residing on different islands can represent a sole population unit. Implications for eradication procedures are discussed.
