Pesticide tests on humans cause concern

Article Abstract:

The revelation that Californian pesticide concern Amvac Chemical Corp has held to fund a study at the University of California, Davis, into the effects on humans of exposure to the powerful soil fumigant methyl isothiocyanate has prompted concerns about the use of human subjects by pesticide manufacturers. It has also come to light that the same company paid for human experiments on British volunteers of the organophosphate pesticide dichlorvos. The US Environment Protection Agency has expressed serious concern about the actions of some pesticide manufacturers.

Breast cancer grant policy comes under fire

Article Abstract:

Complaints of denial of federal funds by two Yale university scientists involved in cancer research have rekindled an intense debate on breast cancer grant policy. The dispute centres around the extent to which peer-review judgements might give way to other important factors in grant allocation. A non-peer-review panel rejects all grant applications not adhering to goals relevant to breast cancer or lacking the potential of a breakthrough. However, the criteria for research approval is not transparent enough to instil confidence in the scientists.
