Science to stay on top at French museum

Article Abstract:

The future of the Musee de l'Homme in Paris, France, continues to be the subject of political debate. President Jacques Chirac supported the plan to convert the anthropology museum into a museum of fine arts, but this plan proved controversial. Scientists felt that art curators would strip items in the ethnology collections of their cultural context, and that research activities would diminish. The newly-elected socialist government is keen to establish a compromise solution, and to introduce more scientific representation to the committee considering the future of the museum.

Spermatid injection fertilizes ethics debate

Article Abstract:

The use of a new technique, known as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), in child bearing is being opposed on ethical issues, in France because the technique is being employed without testing it on animals. Some scientific problems could also arise as the technique uses cells selected at random. This deletes the competition, that exists in a conventional IVF, between sperms. Researchers say that the technique should be used only in cases where parents are at a risk of bearing children with genetic disorders.

France takes gentler approach to reforms

Article Abstract:

The French government has announced a program of university reforms that met the approval of the academic sector. One of the key reforms aims to reduce failure rates in the first two years of study leading to a university diploma of general studies. The streamlining of the three-semester academic year into two semesters and an increase in tutorials are also part of the reforms. Moreover, there will be an extension of the Universite 2000 construction plan.
