Structural biology gets UK funding boost

Article Abstract:

The UK is in danger of losing its leading position in structural biology research unless efforts are made to encourage greater cooperation between universities and between universities and industry, according to the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. This finding has prompted the government to make available 8.5 million pounds sterling. This will be used over three years to create multidisciplinary units and to modernize equipment in structural biology research.

BA puts government science move under the microscope

Article Abstract:

The British Association for the Advancement of Science indicates that the British Government is not very interested in basic science even though it spends more money for the research purpose. The absence of interest is due to basic science not being a mainstream political issue. Basic science has more supporters in industry than in government. Geoffrey Robinson, the director of IBM, is of the opinion that a strong basic science is vital to industry.

UK holds up applications of genetically modified crops

Article Abstract:

Life science companies and the British government have agreed to a moratorium on commercial production of genetically modified crops. The delay will be in place while research is carried out on the ecological impact of such crops, with a minimum 12-month delay for herbicide-tolerant products, and three-years for crops that are resistant to insects. This is one of a number of measures seeking to calm public concern about genetically engineered crops.
