Planet X: a myth exposed

Article Abstract:

The existence of Planet X in the solar system is being debated due to scant astronomical evidence. Observational surveys by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite have so far failed to give indication of the planet's existence. The three uncertainties in planetary ephemerides used by Planet X supporters were examined by Myles Standish of Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Standish used the correct masses of the Jovian planets based on Voyager missions to calculate planetary orbits. The new planetary ephemerides still cannot predict the existence of Planet X.

Back in focus

Article Abstract:

There are still mixed views about whether a planet exists around star 51 Pegasi. The original suggestion that a planet could be present was based on periodic variations in Doppler shifts of the light from the star. This view was challenged by David Gray, who believed that only an undulating, pulsating stellar surface could cause spectral-line variations. He has now been challenged by researchers who believe that there is no spectral evidence of pulsations. This means that the existence of a planet is the likely explanation for oscillations.

Evidence for planet engulfment by the star HD82943

Article Abstract:

Research examining evolution models of planetary systems outside the solar system is presented. It is suggested that the detection of the Li isotope in the atmosphere of the HD82943 star may be indicative of a the process by which a star is engulfing a planet.
