Plate-boundary deformation associated with the great Sumatra-Andaman earthquake

Article Abstract:

The Sumatra-Andaman earthquake of December 2004 is the first giant earthquake to have occurred since the advent of new space-based geological survey and broadband seismology. The estimates of ground displacement associated with this event are described, using global positioning system (GPS) surveys in northwestern Sumatra combined with in situ and remote observations of the vertical motion of coral reefs.

What happened and what's next?

Article Abstract:

A submarine rupture running from offshore Aceh, Indonesia, to the Andaman Islands, caused the huge earthquake of 26 December 2004 followed by tsunami. Explanations are provided on why early analyses grossly underestimated the rupture length, presenting an analysis of high-frequency seismic signals that clearly show northward propagation of the rupture for a distance of about 1,200 km.

Megathrust investigations

Article Abstract:

A deadly high intensity earthquake beneath the Indian Ocean, generated devastating tsunami in a relatively low seismic activity zone in December 2004. The scientists are using global positioning system (GPS) and seismic measurements to detect faults, which will help in understanding the events leading unto major earthquake.
