Polarity bites

Article Abstract:

Studies reveal that epithelial cells organize the cytoskeleton, the highly organized internal structure network essential for adhesion and polarity, and thereby regulate both assembly of specialized adhesive structures and apical/basal polarity, necessary for the suppression of cancer cells. A synaptotagmin-like protein Bitesize is suggested to regulate the actin cytoskeleton by binding to Moesin, a cytoplasmic protein mediating membrane-cytoskeletal interactions in the apical domain.

Selective inhibition of cotranslational translocation of vascular cell adhesion molecule 1

Article Abstract:

A demonstration that the compound represses the biosynthesis of vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VACM1) in cells by blocking the process of contranslational translocation, which is dependent on the signal peptide of VCAM1, is presented. The results indicate that the inhibition of cotranslational translocation with low-molecular-mass compounds, using specificity conferred by signal peptides, could modulate the biosynthesis of certain secreted and/or membrane proteins.

Vinculin activation by talin through helical bundle conversion

Article Abstract:

The crystal structures of human vinculin in its inactive and talin-activated states are reported. It shows, that the binding of vinculin to focal adhesions requires its association with talin.
