Complex factors like food tree preferences, history of disturbance, Chlamydia infection, make population trends difficult to predict. Overall the koala is considered 'vulnerable' by the World Conservation Union Criteria.

Demographic forecasting in koala conservation

Article Abstract:

Accurate predictions of koala popular can be made using population viability analysis methods. The genetic differentiation on the north-south axis also needs to be considered to maintain population across the range.
