Power behind diversity's throne

Article Abstract:

Variation in diversity as a result of extrinsic determinants could dominate the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem properties, according to research into whether large-scale variation in diversity is attributable to factors such as climate, soil fertility and other factors called extrinsic determinants of diversity. Variation in diversity within communities could play a much smaller or different role than existing research may indicate. Forecasting the ecosystem repercussions of biodiversity loss will need some branching out from the types of experiment that dominate research in this field at present.

Biodiversity body 'needs more science'

Article Abstract:

United Nations member countries met to discuss the workings of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity. Also under consideration was the convention's Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA). SBSTTA was created to provide scientific advice for member countries and it is also involved in analysing national biodiversity inventories. However its discussions have taken on a political bias as governments are often represented by diplomats rather than scientists.
