European principles worth sustaining

Article Abstract:

European Commission's Fifth Framework on research and development (R&D) should continue its financial support to industrial research, development of R&D in less developed member countries, and the Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR) program. The UK has proposed that the industry should guide research supported by the Framework. France and the UK do not support grants to small and medium enterprises that encourage R&D development in less developed countries. The TMR program should be sustained as there are many barriers to the mobility of researchers.

Figures confirm global R&D spending trends

Article Abstract:

Paris, France-based Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development has estimated that the total spending on research and development by the world's industrialized nations declined in 1993. The reduction is probably due to lower military research spending and lower research budgets in private industries. Compared to 1990, total research and development spending fell in all major industrialized nations except the UK. However, there was a large increase in spending by Denmark (354%) and Greece (280%).
