Mass extinction probed

Article Abstract:

Studies of fossils have shown that there were two rates of species extinction after the meteorite crash 65 million years ago. Some species became extinct gradually while others became extinct suddenly. Mass extinction happened to only a few species but it allowed other species to become dominant. Research using sea urchin fossils suggests that their extinction was caused by a nutrient crisis and also how they fed. Differences in biological make-up played a crucial part in the survival of some types of urchin.
