Prairie-dog model offers hope of tackling monkeypox virus

Article Abstract:

The poxvirus expert is trying to create a new line of attack on the monkeypox virus. Mark Buller of Saint Louis University in Missouri is developing a laboratory model for monkeypox infection via the use of prairie dogs which may be able to transmit the virus.

Agony for researchers as mix-up forces retraction of ecstasy study

Article Abstract:

The scientists accidentally injected monkeys with methamphetamine when they were supposed to test the drug ecstasy effects. The authorities say that the mix-up occured before the drugs arrived at the lab.

Academy calls for improved tests to beat prion disease

Article Abstract:

The importance of diagnostic tests for prion diseases is highlighted. Research into the nature of prions which cause illness such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy or mad cow disease is discussed.
