Preview of 1994 US budget emphasizes big projects

Article Abstract:

President Bill Clinton's economic plan of Feb 1993 gives a preview of administration requests for 1994. The 1994 budget will feature significant increases for the National Science Foundation and for the Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology. The National Institutes of Health will receive barely enough to keep abreast of inflation. The superconducting supercollider project of the Department of Energy will not receive full funding, but the National Space and Aeronautics Administration's space station Freedom will be fully funded.

Congress warns NASA not to raid science funds

Article Abstract:

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has been warned by US Congress not to hijack funds allocated to science programmes to solve its projected shortfall in 1998. The agency has been granted an extra $148 million above its $13.5 billion allocation but NASA's request for further funding to assist with an expected $430 million deficiency in 1998 has been denied. NASA has warned that shortage of money could cause delays in building the international space station, which will be an estimated $600 million over budget when it is completed.
