The effects of demonstrator social status and prior foraging success on social learning in laying hens

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to investigate the different demonstrator saliences of domestic hens. The behavior of a dominant cockerel, a dominant hen, a mid-ranking hen and a subordinate hen was observed. Results indicate that the interaction between dominance and gender affects the level of influence demonstrator hens may exude. Dominant hens were seen to have greater demonstrator salience than the others which may be attributed to their foraging ability.

Parental fish change their cannibalistic behavior in response to the cost-to-benefit ratio of parental care

Article Abstract:

A response to the high energetic cost of care through partial filial cannibalism, the act of cannibalizing some offspring is explained. The hypothesis was tested by manipulating the cost-to-benefit ratio of care in the scissortail sergeant, Abudefduf sexfasciatus, a tropical damselfish with male care.

Body size and fluctuating asymmetry in relation to cannibalistic behaviour in laying hens

Article Abstract:

Research describing cannibalism in laying hens is presented. In particular the association of asymmetric bodyshape, in both perpetrators and victims, with cannibalism is investigated.
