Social exploitation of intermittently available foods and the social reinstatement of food perference

Article Abstract:

An investigation is conducted into whether Norway rats were able to use socially gained information to register occurrences of food which was intermittently available. Observer rats were seen to show preferences fro foods which had been eaten by demonstration rats.

Interaction of social and individual learning in food preferences of Norway rats

Article Abstract:

Research describing social influences on food choices of Norway rats, Rattus norvegicus, is presented. It is shown that social learning introduces behavior but individual preference determines its persistence.

Effects of environmental stability and demonstrator age on social learning of food preferences by young Norway rats

Article Abstract:

Socially learned food preferences of Norway rats, Rattus norvegicus, are used to examine two common predictions of formal models of social learning in animals. Food choices of rats that are moved daily from one cage to another and fed at unpredictable times for unpredictable periods are less affected by demonstrators than are rats maintained in stable environments.
