Priceless proposals

Article Abstract:

The environmental research efforts of various government and private organizations in the US are not coordinated. The Carnegie Commission on Science, Technology and Government has recommended organizational changes, but has not addressed what types of research should be pursued and which dispensed with. Nor has it addressed the costs entailed, and whether the budget allotted for environmental research is adequate. Neglect of these key issues makes the recommendations unsuited for the current preoccupation with economic concerns.

Growing with environmental care

Article Abstract:

The World Bank, in its 15th annual report on sustainable development, proves its commitment to promoting economic growth without environmental damage but falls short of requiring population controls as a condition for lending money to countries. The report, entitled 'World Development Report 1992,' rightly notes that population control is essential if impoverished countries are to attain the economic well-being that is a prerequisite for affording environmental improvement.

Environmental protection or imperialism?

Article Abstract:

Efforts of industrialized nations to impose the same environmental standards they have established for themselves on developing nations have been viewed as imperialist in nature. Poorer countries cannot afford to sustain the environmental standards adopted by developed countries because they do not have adequate resources to undertake the same environmental protection strategies. Some environmental regulations imposed by the US have been considered illegal under GATT rules.
