Programme aids developing world

Article Abstract:

The International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA) has the goal of bringing innovative agricultural biotechnological techniques to the developing world's farmers. ISAAA, whose headquarters until 1997 will be at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, wants those farmers to use the new methods to achieve greater productivity while cutting the use of pesticides. ISAAA will concentrate its efforts in those countries where the new methods are deemed likeliest to succeed such as Mexico, Taiwan and Costa Rica.

US panel disagrees on cancer testing method

Article Abstract:

The maximum tolerated dose (MTD) methodology for carcinogenicity testing has become controversial in the US National Research Council. A committee issued a report with dissenting opinions criticizing MTD although the majority supported MTD for bioassays. Six out of 17 committee members opposed MTD, which originated in the 1960s and has been standard for animal-based tests for over 15 years.
