Prospective infanticide and ovulation retardation in free-living house sparrows

Article Abstract:

The infanticide and ovulation retardation behaviors in house sparrows are analyzed. Results show that when males take over a nest after a female's fertile period has recently ended, theycommit infanticide. However, no infanticide occurs when males arrive four days or less before clutch initiation. Therefore, male infanticide ensures genetic paternity, and females use strategic ovulation retardation to cope with the risks of infanticide.

Parental genetic characteristics and hatching success in the spotless starling, sturnus unicolor

Article Abstract:

The effects of parental homozygosity and parental genetic similarity on egg hatchability in the spotless starling are investigated. Results reveal that effects of success may be relevant in wild bird species without geographical barriers that could limit immigration or dispersal.

A test of the hypothesis of mate choice based on heterozygosity in the spotless starling

Article Abstract:

A new study of the spotless starling investigates the theory of mate choice based on heterozygosity which predicts that sexual traits will reach their extreme expression in males with large average heterozygosity.
