Protein kinase B (c-Akt) in phosphatidylinositol-3-OH kinase signal transduction

Article Abstract:

Protein kinase B (PKB) is part of a growth factor-induced signal transduction pathway and its activation is mediated by phosphatidylinositol-3-OH kinase PI(3)K, implying that the pathway is oncogenic conversion sensitive. The mediation of PI(3)K was demonstrated by the inhibition of PKB activation by wortmannin, a PI(3)K inhibitor. It was also found that phosphorylation is the regulation mechanism for PKB activation.

An alternative to destruction

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the discovery and investigation of a non-destructive function for the protein modifying group ubiquitin. The activation of signalling processes through the action of ubiquitin is discussed.
