Research into the working of the signalling molecule macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) in the immune system is discussed. MIF has now been shown to interact inside cells with Jab 1, an activator of gene expression.

Issues are presented concerning the pathways which allow insulin to function in the body as a stimulant for glucose removal by fat and muscle cells. The mechanism of insulin function is discussed.
